These casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

If you are shooting with your underwater digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best images underwater. Remember that as you farther under water, light diffuses. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than those images you took while on land – this is because of the light diffusion the red spectrum seems darker. To avoid this, use white balance come up with natural colors. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. Why Buy A Olympus Stylus 790SW Waterproof Digital Camera?

Are you the kind of person that hangs out in a lot of cold, wet, and sandy places? Apparently the good folks at Olympus think some of us do. So much so, that they'd like to convince you how much you need to buy the Olympus Stylus 790SW Waterproof Digital Camera. My first reaction upon reading about the waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof (really?) and sand-proof features of the 790SW, was hey that's a nice idea. My second reaction was what's so special about that, and shouldn't all cameras be built like that to start with?

Shouldn't all cameras be able to take a little abuse? All digital cameras should be able to be dropped from four or five feet without damage. All digital cameras should be sealed well enough that sand or water won't find a way in. It's just a question of good build quality. Olympus however thinks this is a big revelation and a major marketing point for the Stylus 790SW. The bigger question though is, does it take good pictures?

Being a waterproof camera shouldn't just mean you can hold the camera underwater, and it won't leak. It still needs to take good pictures. While the 790SW can be held underwater (up to 33 feet according to Olympus), the pictures it takes are not so great. In fact, if you do take it underwater, plan on taking a lot of pictures. Most will turn out quite distorted and blurry, but the more pictures you take the better your chances of getting a few good ones. In addition, the LCD is pretty much unusable underwater, as it's just too hard to see. You'll have to just point, click and hope for the best.

Meanwhile, back on dry land, it appears the Olympus Stylus 790SW is really out of it's element. If you decide to buy a 790SW, you need to be aware, that your are sacrificing image quality for durability. There are other cameras that will take better pictures for the same price. Lower ISOs are fine, but anything over 200 and your going to see noticeable image noise. Color saturation and sharpness are also below standard when compared to other cameras in this price range.

If your favorite game is "let's bury the camera in the sand", then the Stylus 790SW is the camera for you. If however it's not, here's a few other detracting factors in mind when considering the 790SW:

• Non standard XD memory cards
  
• Grainy picture quality
  
• LCD is hard to read due to overly reflective coating
  
• Automatic setting defaults are calibrated poorly
  
• Menus slow down manual tweaking efforts

For the right person (Indiana Jones, Laura Croft, Edmund Hillary) in the right place (Antarctica, Great Coral Reef, Sahara), this Olympus Stylus is the perfect camera. If you don't fall into one of those categories at least part of the time, the spend your money elsewhere. While the 790SW sets a good example for other camera manufacturers in terms of durability, you'll get significantly nicer images from a number of other digital cameras.

Your best bet to break into the stock photo field is the book and magazine industry. The photography budget for a medium-size publishing house is between $20,000 and $40,000 monthly. For a major publisher, it's twice that amount. Stock photographers who are consistent at selling their photos have learned to identify certain markets that match their own areas of interest. Once they become a "regular" at the publishing house, they receive a steady stream of photo requests and assignments.

Over the years, I've looked at dozens of collections of superb photos gathering dust in a shoe box. One important element stood between those pictures being published and remaining in the shoe box: skillful marketing techniques. I've noticed that the photographers who succeed at selling to the book and magazine industry are those that have developed a strategy for selling, which today we call, marketing.

• CREATE FIRST THEN FIND A MARKET

Most entry level stock photographers fail because they go after the "photos that sell", not necessarily the ones they love photographing.

When you try to be all things to all people in the publishing world, the photobuyer's reaction is: "No one can be that good!" Discover your photographic strength areas, and go for them. Most entry-level stock photographers go have the whole pie rather than the piece of the pie. Become a specialist. don't photograph everything you see. you'll burn out. You'll become a valuable resource to a certain group of photobuyers out there. If wild horses can't pull you away from your goals, you'll succeed. You'll fail or get bored if you aim for only those markets that 'pay well'.

• FOR SOUL NOT FOR SALE

Writer's rarely publish their poetry and even rarer is getting paid for it. In the stock photography field, don't expect your 'artsy' pictures to sell. Consider them your poetry. Ask yourself next time you're taking (making) a picture, "Is this for sale or is it for soul?". Spend Sundays to take pictures that feed your soul, take the marketable pictures during the week to feed the family.

• PASSING THROUGH

Give the appearance that you are a 'permanent' resident. Most creative people have a tendency to change their address once every five or six years. Photobuyers have a tendency to shy away from the vagabond, the wanderers, no matter how talented they might be. Buying photos is a business and they want you to be businesslike in their dealings with you, and that means being 'reachable' five days before deadline. Get an e-mail address and stick with it.

• LOOKING LIKE A BEGINNER

If you appear to be 'just starting out' photobuyers will pass you on by. They don't have the time to hold your hand or "train" you. They'd rather spend their time with someone who is "hassle-free". You should give the appearance of looking like a pro. Build a quality website. Correspond on quality stationery, labels, and envelopes. The photobuyer will put you on her/his “white list.”Don’t use the Internet to send a catalog of your pictures to a prospective editor. Instead, ask for permission first.

• TECHNICAL FAILINGS

The automatic controls on digital cameras today make it nearly impossible not to get a technically good photo. Photobuyers expect technical excellence from you. No matter how excellent your image may be, if it does not meet the reproduction quality for the publishing industry, you'll fail. A 1D meg picture may be resolution enough for magazine and book markets, however, a 50 meg image is often the minimum requirement of many of your markets. Use this as a guideline when buying your next camera.

• HOMEWORKLESS

Digital SLR Camera versus a Compact Digital Camera

Digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras are excellent cameras that produce clearer, sharper and more colourful images than most point and shoot digital cameras available. With prices falling rapidly, they are now more affordable then ever. With the price gap between an entry model digital SLR camera and the most expensive compact digital camera narrowing; the question is… do I spend the extra money and get a Digital SLR camera? or save a few hundred dollars and purchase the best digital compact camera.

Well, it really depends on your budget; however if you do spend the extra money, here's what you get:
In addition to the price falls in the Digital SLR models, the performance on these cameras has increased year on year with the latest Digital SLR cameras being quicker and faster than ever before. They have improved to such an extent that power up or start-up time is near instantaneous with virtually no lag time. “Lag time is the time between you pressing the shutter release button and the camera actually taking the shot”. This delay can vary quite a bit between different camera models and it is one of the biggest drawbacks compared to a compact digital camera. Please note, that as the LCD screen is only used for viewing the image, the battery life of a digital SLR can allow up to 2000 shots per charge in some cameras compared to 500 for a good point and shoot digital camera.

Digital SLR cameras also allow you to interchange lens such as adding a zoom or macro lens when required. On the negative side of a Digital SLR camera; They are usually larger and heavier than compact digital cameras, the image cannot be previewed on the LCD screen prior taking the picture. If you really require the image to be viewed on the LCD prior to taking the picture, there are third party manufacturers that produce LCD screens that attaches to the viewfinder and allow the scene to be view just like a compact digital camera. The other drawback is the inability to take videos and finally, lenses are expensive with the majority costing more than the camera itself. Although compact digital cameras cannot compete on features with a Digital SLR camera, they are great value, have the ability to take videos and are portable.

How to Improve Your Digital Photography

You finally have a digital camera, so now what? You have taken a number of photographs but they are not exactly what you were expecting.
You want the magic of digital. You want those great photographs shown to you in the advertisements.
There is no magic. With some work though you will be able to improve your photographs and have a great time doing it.
First get familiar with your camera. Read the manuals that came with it and learn about all the features available. Try these few suggestions.

• Forget the Auto mode
• Try the different Manual and Semi-Manual modes
• Use the different White Balances to see effects
• Change the Shutter speed
• Change the Aperture
• Use the Flash (even in daylight) then turn it off

You are getting the idea now. Try every different setting available. Make notes about them and learn. What is one of the greatest advantages of digital photography? You can take a ton of pictures and it won't cost you any extra money. This is a great learning tool. Use it to full advantage.
View your photography as art. You are not just taking snap shots. You want to make photographs that can be framed and put on display. Keep these points in mind.

• Use a tripod, monopod, or brace yourself to keep the camera perfectly steady
• Take shots from different perspectives, down low, up high, off to one side

What ever it is you want to shoot, walk around it first. See it from all possible angles and positions. Look at it from a distance and from close up. The more photographs you take the more you will learn and improve. The art of photography is like any other. Keep practicing and taking notes and you will show a steady improvement.

Get help.

One of the best ideas is to join a camera club or photography meet up group. You will be able to meet other photographers of all levels and trade ideas back and forth.

Join an online group where you can post photographs, for free. You will be able to get feed back on your photos, and to give feed back when you get more comfortable.

You will be able to view thousands of photographs from other people. This will give you some great ideas. On line groups also have forums where you can join in and get answers to any of your questions. You will find the forums a virtual treasure chest of information.
View your photography as art and take control. Take lots of pictures using all of the tools and look for all the advice you can find. Post your pictures on line and invite friends and family and members of the photographic community to critique them.
It is a nice feeling to have friends and family say that you take great pictures. However there is no greater incentive than to have someone you have never met look at your photos and tell you they are impressed.

The Best Waterproof Digital Camera Anywhere

Are you looking to get some great underwater shark pictures in your quest to be National Geographics next big photographer? Or maybe you just want a camera that you don't have to worry about around the boat, beach or pool. While you can get an additional add-on waterproof case for some existing camera, they can be expensive, bulky and awkward to both pack and use. Why not get a camera that's already waterproof without needing to spend extra money on accessories.

There are several models out there, but my favorite choice would have to be the Olympus Stylus 790SW waterproof, shock proof, dust proof, and freeze proof. The 790SW is the successor the the 770SW, which is still available, but a little harder to find. The biggest difference between the two cameras, is that the older 770SW can go be used in up to 33 feet of water, whereas the newer 790SW can only be used in up to 10 feet of water. Olympus apparently decided that the demographic for the 790SW weren't big deep sea divers.

Probably makes sense.
The other nice thing about the 790SW, is it's all around durability. This has got to be one of the toughest cameras out there. Dropping it from 5 feet or less has no affect on the sensitive internal workings. Why more cameras aren't built this way I have no idea. Not only can you take you take pictures under the water, you can take it out in the snow with no worries as well. Temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, or -10 degrees Celsius won't damage the camera. I'm more of a warm weather fan myself.
Friends of ours recently used their 790SW at one of those indoor water slide parks. They shot a video while hurtling through one of those big blue tubes from beginning to final submersion at the bottom. It's a pretty trippy clip as the light streams through the semi-translucent tube and the riders pitch to and fro. Definitely a fun camera. Some slight sacrifice in image quality are completely outweighed by the fun factor under these circumstances.

What is Glamour Photography?

Some people think glamour is all about make up or clothes. Others think it is about nudity or titillation. Still other consider it a style of lighting.

All these things have some basis in fact, but miss the mark. First let's look at another genre of photography closely related but separate from glamour - Fashion photography.

Fashion photography is all about the clothes. Even when it seems to be about story or skinny models, it is about the clothes. I like to say that fashion models are just clothes hangers. Which is probably why so many of them look like clothes hangers.

Given this focus on clothes, what is Glamour?

"Fashion is about the bra, glamour is about the breast."

One of the advantages about being a glamour model rather than a fashion one is the image is about you. You could be wearing the million dollar diamond studded bra, but the viewer is more interested in what's inside the bra more than the lingerie itself.

This is explains why glamour models are not as thin as fashion models and why many have surgical enhancements to fill those bras.

If the model is is the focus of the glamour image, what other things make an image glamour.

Make up is one factor. It is generally heavier and brings more emphasis to the eyes and lips. Colors are warmer and bolder than standard makeup and eyes are smokier.

While the stereotype of a glamour model is tan skin and blonde hair, I've shot many models with pale skin and black hair that reach out and grab you. The point is the sexiness of the model, not her skin color.

Well if it is about sexy, then isn't it porn? That brings up the question of what is porn. I once shot a friend in a school girl outfit that exposed a little bit of midrift and some leg and my sister-in-law said it was porn. While Playboy is considered the low end of porn, Maxim isn't considered porn at all.

Sexiness isn't about turning men on, it is about attraction. When a woman is being sexy she doesn't necessarily want to have sex with the person she's focused on, but she does want to make them interested in her.

So we show some skin in glamour, but that's not the deciding factor. Matter of fact, it is generally sexier to cover somethings up, than to show everything. Even in nude glamour photography, you like to keep mystery.

Lastly let's talk about lighting. In general glamour photography is thought of as being very warmly lit. Warmly lighting means it has a gold/yellow/orange tint to it. When I do and teach glamour photography, I use a Bastard Amber gel. Bastard Amber is a specific shade. Hey I didn't make the name, but it works great.

You can do glamour with most lighting. I've done natural white light and even tinted blue light. The color doesn't make it glamour.

-Add asymmetrical balance and balance objects in the foreground with the background

Now, using some of these compositional techniques will get you to take better pictures. However, photography is also technically oriented as well. You can have the best composition every but if your picture is out of focus nobody will notice the nice photo. They'll think of you as a beginner.

Technique Two: Lines

Lines are very effective tools for taking photos. They will be encountered in lots of shots you take. So it is a good idea to get better at using them. You can use lines to lead to the subject of interest to make for more powerful shots.

Technique Three: Simplicity

Many beginners take photos that are just too complex. Try to make your photo simple by focusing on primarily one subject a photo.

20 Beginner Tips For Taking Digital Photography

Digital cameras are one of the greatest inventions of modern times. We are so fortunate to have this modern convenience called Digital Photography. To be able to capture a precious moment or beautiful scene at the click of a button, is something we should not take for granted.

Many beginners find digital photography rather challenging and rightly so. Today, more and more digital cameras are being created and it seems like the more digital cameras they make, the more difficult they become to use.

I own a Canon Powershot S3 IS. I purchased this digital camera about a year ago and I still haven't utilized all of the awesome little features this camera has to offer. Now you may not want or even need a camera with tons of features. It really depends on the type of pictures you plan on taking.

Regardless of the camera you own or are planning to own, you should have a well rounded knowledge of digital photography. I hope the following 20 tips for taking digital photography will prove to be useful in your quest for taking better photographs.

1. Know your camera. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is not taking time to learn about the features of your camera. Don't be lazy. Read your instruction manual.

2 - When shooting sunny outdoor shots, try adjusting your white balance setting from auto to cloudy. The auto setting will make your shots appear too cold. When you change it to cloudy, it will increase the warmth of your pictures.

3 - If you are looking for superior image quality, the ability to use a variety of lenses and print large high quality photos, then considering a Digital SLR Camera.

4 - Use your flash outdoors. Sometimes, even on a sunny day outdoors, there is still a need for a flash. If the sun is directly over head or behind your subject, this can cause dark shadows to appear on the face. The flash will help lighten the subjects face.

5- Sometimes simply turning your camera and taking vertical shots can make a world of difference. Experiment more with vertical picture taking.

6 - Do not put your subjects directly in the center of your shot. Move your subject off center to inject more life into your photos.

7 - Learn how to hold your digital camera. One of the most common problems beginners face is the shaking of the camera because they are not holding it properly. Of course, the best way to avoid shaking the camera is to use a tripod. If you don't have a tripod, then you should be holding your camera with two hands. Put one hand on the right hand side of your camera where you actually snap the photo and the other hand will support the weight of your camera. Depending on the camera, your left hand will either be positioned on the bottom or around your lens.

8 - Learn about the "Rule of Thirds". This is a well known principle of photographic composition that every beginner should become familiar with. Do a search online and you will find many tutorials on this subject.

9 - Look at other photographers work. Just spending time studying the work of other photographers can provide loads of inspiration.

10 - Join online photography communities. Get active and ask questions.

11 - Do not compare your photography to anyone else.

12 - Do not copy the work of other photographers. Try and develop your own unique style.

13 - Do not leave your batteries in your camera if you don't plan on using your camera for long periods of time. Some batteries run the risk of leaking and this can damage your camera.
