Image Stabilization (IS) on the Canon, or Vibration Reduction (VR) if you are a fan of Nikon, is a collection of techniques used to reduce blur caused by excessive movement of the camera during the exposure.

Most photographers, amateur or professional alike, understand the value of IS. Because they are often difficult to obtain a stable position to take pictures, especially if you're traveling in a car, plane or train. IS (Image Stabilization) is even more important when recording video as the exposure time is longer.

Optical image stabilization did stabilize images recorded through an optical path toward censorship. There are two ways that run through the camera's optical image stabilization, based correction lens (lens-based) and a correction based sensors (sensor-based).

Lens-based stabilization (lens-based stabilization) using floating lens movement is controlled by an electromagnet, vibration is detected by two gyroscopic sensors to correct horizontal and vertical. Sensor-shift stabilization using a gyroscopic sensor that sends information to a camera that can work automatically to make the correction.

Digital Image Stabilization or digital image stabilization is used in most modern video cameras. This method of transferring digital images from a video frame to frame to counteract the movement. Pixels are used which fall outside border of the visible frame to provide a buffer for the movement. This technique is performed in real-time and does not affect the noise level of the image. Stabilization filter to do the same for digital image stabilization by cropping the image to hide the movement.

The form of external stabilization include stabilizing the camera body externally rather than using internal methods. Again gyroscope is used, usually connected where the camera is tripod mounted, to counteract any vibration. The simplest method to stabilize the camera is to use an external device such as a tripod or steadycam.

All these methods work well, but they have certain disadvantages. Digital method is fairly new and constantly refined by the manufacturer to help produce the best images. Camera with image stabilization allows photographers of any level to take pictures without difficulty.
